Preparing for a photoshoot can seem overwhelming, particularly if you only have one every few years, or less. The key is to be prepared, ask questions and let your photographer guide you. I’ve noticed it’s the little things that can get overlooked, so consider these 5 things:
Check the fingernails! Everyone’s! Chipped nail polish on teen daughter? Jagged nails? Playground of dirt under a lads? It’s not necessary to get your nails done before a photoshoot (though kind of fun if you do) however clean, trimmed nails are a bonus!
Got time to visit the hairdresser? Within reason of course! Shiny, clean hair is great. If you are due for a re-colour or re-highlight best to do it well before your photo shoot, you want to love those photos you are paying for and hair regrowth when your head is looking down can be kind of ugly. Oh, and does Dad need a haircut and neck or beard trim?
Is someone bringing a snack bag? Small water bottles, non-messy, non-coloured snacks for younger kids and wipes? If I’m shooting a family with young kids I try to have these on hand to ease the sudden thirst and hunger pains, and admittedly, sometimes for bribery.
Two spray bottles: Hair spray, even if you aren’t a regular hairspray user, it’s best to bring a comb and travel hairspray can for hair flyaways. Insect repellant, particularly for late afternoon shoots when the bugs join in on the photo op. Again, as a mum and photographer I always have these on hand, and try not to mix up the two bottles of course :) .
Pack an extra plain shirt for the little ones, just in case. You know how it goes!
